Main River Bicycle Route

Bike Route Frankfurt am Main

Finally, Spring!

One of the best things Frankfurt has to offer is it’s surroundings, so if you’re looking to make the most out of the city on the weekends we suggest you grab a bike and enjoy one of it’s many nearby cycling routes.

What started off for us as a morning bike ride along the Main river from Frankfurt’s Sachsenhausen neighbourood, ended up as a 27km trip to the neighbouring city of Hanau, two and a half hours later. The entire route runs along the south side of the Main river. As soon as you leave Frankfurt and Offenbach behind, you start passing through endless green lawns and small villages, a sheer delight. If you get hungry along the way, there are many spots perfect for a for picnic, as well as a couple of beer gardens with lovely views to the river.

Once you reach Hanau, if you’re feeling tired you have the option to grab the train at the Hanau Hauptbahnhof for a 20 minute ride back to Frankfurt, or if you want to carry on you can continue along the river to the old town of Aschaffenburg, a further 18km away.

Overall a great riverside bike route around Frankfurt am Main!

Today I cycled this route, and it was wonderful. The scenery was lovely, the pathway made for a comfortable ride, and there were many other cyclists who were clearly having as good a time as I was. I stopped off at several places for food, beer, coffee and cake (there was also a little festival were a brass band were playing), and at the end of the day I have something of a farmer’s tan from spending so much time in the sun. Thank you very much for sharing, and keep up the good work.

You can go the other way too i.e. downriver and you will come to the village of Höchst. In Höchst, there is a gathering of artists along the river every second Sunday painting and exhibiting.- sort of the only Montmartre in Germany. Go to Facebook just google Montmartre-am-Main for the dates and fotos. This event is open to anyone who likes to paint.

The Montmartre-am-Main art group will be there on May 5 for their public. The group is looking for new artists to participate, too. Just show up and draw or paint and get to know each other.

Sounds like fun. Where could I rent a bike and where can I connect to the trail? I will be staying near Willy-Brandt-Platz in city center.
