Heidelberg

Heidelberg is one of the best one-day trips from Frankfurt am Main you can enjoy if you’re looking to visit a small old town with picturesque landscapes.

Around an hour away both by car or by train, the old town of Heidelberg is as charming as can be. It lies on the river Neckar, with Heidelberg Castle dominating the views.

Predominantely a student town, it’s home to Heidelberg University (the oldest in all of Germany – it was founded in 1386!) This gives the town a young and artsy vibe, with students on bicycles and small cafes and restaurants sprinkled everywhere. The main pedestrian street (Hauptstrasse) is filled with all types of shops, from well known international clothing brands to jewelry and home decorations.

Spring and early Autumn (when these pictures were taken) would be the best seasons to go, as that’s when you usually get nice sunny days and warm mild temperatures.
